Raindrops keep falling on our heads!
If you’ve ever been to the Coach House, you know that we have a pretty excellent coffee room. There are bookshelves everywhere, and a gnarled old coffee table with chairs that have, over the years, held the bums of most of CanLit’s finest. There’s also a fish tank with three obese, geriatric goldfish, and beside the fish tank is one of those cheap metal salad bowls. This bowl is not for salad, though we do like our greens. No, this salad bowl is there to catch drips. Not literary drips, raindrop drips. That’s right: our roof is leaking. And it doesn’t just leak a little; when it rains outside, it rains inside, too.
In thirty-nine years, Coach House has never asked you for a penny. We’ve asked you to buy books, but you’ve been on the winning end of that bargain. In fact, we’ve probably given you coffee and cookies in that very coffee room. So, now, after thirty-nine years, we’re asking you help us raise the roof. Or, at least to patch it. Which will cost us $5,000. Divided among all our friends, we figure that’s a small amount. So, we’re asking you to consider coughing up a maximum of $10 to keep us dry.
What’s in it for me, you ask? Well, not only will you get our undying gratitude (and dry cookies) but you will also get your own slug. Not the garden kind, the printing kind. We will, on our very own linotype machine (which has, in its day, typeset books by bpNichol, Michael Ondaatje and Matt Cohen), make a line of lead type – a slug – with your name on it. We’ll put ’em all together into one long list of our Friends for posterity. You can visit your slug any time – we’ll keep a pot of coffee hot.
Help us reclaim the salad bowl for its intended purpose – send us your clams (max ten) in cash or cheque to:

Or donate C$10 now through our secure server, fast, safe and simple. Just enter your name as you would like it to appear on your slug (if you enter nothing, your billing name will be used):
